Become an SHS Scholar

Select admitted students to the Dietrich College of Humanities & Social Sciences (DC) and/or the Mellon College of Science (MCS) are also invited to join the Science and Humanities Scholars (SHS) Program. The SHS Program is designed for the student who has an initial set of interests ranging across the liberal arts and sciences. SHS students enroll in one college, either the Mellon College of Science or the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students who accept the invitation to join the Science and Humanities Scholars Program enjoy a General Education curriculum that allows major declaration in either college, academic advising that supports exploration across the entire university, a residential cluster for like-minded students, program-sponsored activities, and interdisciplinary academic support.

Currently enrolled students who wish to transfer into the SHS Program may apply after the middle of their second semester at Carnegie Mellon. A group of faculty and deans examine the applicant's academic history, especially with regard to multidisciplinary interests, as well as the applicant's essay and interview that indicate how the student may benefit from and benefit the program.
