Carnegie Mellon undergraduate students not in the SHS program and wishing to transfer into it will be considered according to the following guidelines:

• Must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25
• Must have taken courses from the science and mathematics core and have a science/math grade point average of at least 3.0
• Must have taken courses from the humanities and social sciences core and have a humanities/social sciences grade point average of at least 3.0
• Must submit a short essay explaining why they want to transfer into SHS

Admissions will be on a rolling basis and decisions are made as soon as possible at the SHS Advisory Committee meetings.

Applications should be submitted to either Eric Grotzinger in Doherty Hall 1324 or Joseph Devine in Baker Hall A57.

The core curriculum required for SHS students differs from the core curricula for HSS or MCS students. For specific information, see our comparison of H&SS, MCS, and SHS curricula.

However, there are many additional benefits available to SHS students, including enrichment opportunities such as the SHS speaker series and special student faculty social events. In addition, SHS students are given registration priority in both colleges, making it easier for them to schedule courses they are interested in outside of their major. Finally, there are some majors that have been designed especially for SHS students, with an interdisciplinary focus - the major in biological sciences and psychology and the major in mathematical and statistical sciences.
