76-154: Culture, Education & Society: Comparative Perspectives in US & Russia
This course will analyze the evolution of key educational patterns and cultural characteristics of the United States
and Russia during the past century and a half, with particular concern for identifying between education and
culture. Educational innovation and reform movements in both countries, and the impact of each country on the
other, with receive special attention, including such specific topics as the ideas of John Dewey, the Dalton Plan
of schooling, the Project Method, the Core Curriculum, and the impact of Sputnik on American science education.
Distinctive cultural achievements of both countries will also be highlighted, especially through art and music.
The course will include secondary readings, primary documents, museum visits, and films.
