03-101 B4: Proteins in Disease
This will be a discussion course, which focuses on proteins - their structures, functions and how abnormalities in these macromolecules can be related to a variety of diseases. Building on material presented in general chemistry and biology, students will be introduced to basic protein biochemistry including methods for protein purification and analysis. Instructors will lead discussions based on distributed articles on the proteins associated with sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis. Each student will then be responsible for selecting a protein-related disease, researching what is known about the protein and its role in the disease, and leading a class presentation and discussion on the topic. Grading will be based on attendance, participation in class discussions, and quality of research effort and oral presentation.
