U.S. Copyright Law protects original works of authorship, reserving exclusive rights to copyright owners.  Carnegie Mellon University expects CMU faculty, students, and staff to obey copyright law.  The University Libraries provides resources to help the community understand copyright, manage their own copyrights effectively, and use other people’s copyrighted work legally.  The Libraries also advocate for needed changes in copyright law and interpretations of copyright law aligned with current technologies and user needs, expectations, and practices.
