Abstract: IBM Research - Africa is the 12th addition to the global IBM Research ecosystem. In this presentation I will talk about our mission, goals and aspirations. Using several examples, I will describe some of our strategic focus areas around Smarter Cities and e-government. I will use these examples to furthermore illustrate some of the opportunities and challenges for big data in the African context.
Biography: Dr. Kamal Bhattacharya the Director of the recently founded IBM Research - Africa lab, the12th IBM Research lab, missioned to address key challenges of the African continent through commercially viable innovation that impact people’s lives.
Prior to moving to Africa, he has held various leadership positions at IBM Research in the US and India. Dr. Bhattacharya’s technical expertise covers a wide range of topics in the area of Services research including business process management, cloud computing and enterprise social computing.
Dr. Bhattacharya has been the recipient of multiple IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement awards and best paper awards at international computer science conferences for his contributions to Services research and is an elected member of the IBM Academy of Technology. He started his career at IBM after graduating with a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Göttingen University, Germany
