Pittsburgh Marathon Winner
Rory Cooper Places First at Pittsburgh Marathon 2009
Congratulations Rory Cooper, QoLT's Co-Director, placed first in the hand-cycle race at the May 3, 2009, Pittsburgh Marathon, finishing in 1:52:48. Rory started doing wheelchair road races after suffering a spinal cord injury in 1980, going so far as to compete in the 1988 Paralympics. He came out of retirement three years ago, at the urging of a friend who lost a leg in Iraq.
Quote from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, May 4, 2009: "It was pretty surprising for me," said Cooper, chairman of Pitt's department of rehabilitation science and technology and director of human engineering resource laboratories for the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh healthcare system. "My original goal was just to finish. To me, it's just for personal goals now, to try to stay healthy and encourage other people to stay healthy."
