Hacking Autism through Social Robot Therapy

September 29-30, 2012
World Maker Faire, New York Hall of Science, Queens (NYC)

Autism Speaks Booth, Zone C - Maker Pavilion

QoLT Design Researcher and Origami Robotics founder, Aubrey Shick, joins Marc Sirkin of Autism Speaks at the World Maker Faire in New York City, September 29-30 to hack autism Romibo-style!

The World Maker Faire in New York City is a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, featuring diverse displays of technology, craft, science, fashion, art, and food.

Romibo is a do-it-yourself robot kit for therapy, education and fun.  A Human-System Interaction project within the Qualtiy of Life Technology Center, Romibo explores how social robot therapy can be used to motivate children with autism.  Romibo's animal-like agency and outputs help elicit emotions and behaviors in children who face unique challenges with social engagement and expression.

This inexpensive pet-like robot can be built by anyone or purchased pre-built; the Romibo user community connects via social media and offline workshops to share code and programming tips.
