Where do I apply?

Initial inquiry can be made either in Portugal, Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics or IST-UTL or in Carnegie Mellon. (Click for contact information.) The application will be processed through Carnegie Mellon.

Do I need to be a Portuguese resident to apply?

No. The TCE PhD Program is open to citizens or residents of any nation.

Do I need to be a European resident to apply?

No. The TCE PhD Program is open to citizens or residents of any nation.

Is financial aid available for any applicant?

Yes. All applicants are potentially eligible for financial aid. Decisions on financial support will be made at the time of acceptance.

What backgrounds are acceptable for the applicants?

As an interdisciplinary program, the TCE PhD is open to applicants with backgrounds in engineering, technology studies, economics, business, and the social sciences, including sociology and psychology.

During the PhD, how is my time going to be split between Portugal and Carnegie Mellon?

Students start in their first year in Portugal and then head to Carnegie Mellon in the second year. In the third year, students can either stay in Portugal or the US depending on their research interests and course requirements. After the third year the student should come back to Portugal. Overall, all students must stay at least 50% of the time based in Portugal.
