Crime Prevention

Campus media and publications specific to security and safety issues regularly carry news and information for the university community. Weekly media include the student newspaper, The Tartan, and The 8-1/2 x 11 News. A brochure about the University Police offers details about the shuttle and escort services for students. The Student Handbook is updated annually and provides details about policies and procedures. The widely read campus computer bulletin board is also used as an immediate means of communication.Crime and Safety AlertsUniversity Police from time to time issues alerts to ensure that students, faculty and staff are made aware of important information about incidents and events occurring on and near campus in a timely fashion. "Crime Alerts" are posted to advise the community about individual crimes against persons (e.g., an assault or robbery), or a series of crimes against property (e.g., multiple office thefts) in which the university itself or a member of the university community is a victim. Crime alerts are also issued about serious crimes that occur in the surrounding Oakland neighborhood, other parts of the city that students are likely to frequent, and neighborhoods where significant numbers of students live in off-campus and non-university housing. University Police work closely with individuals reporting serious crimes to ensure a victim's privacy while also ensuring that the community has adequate information regarding potential risks."Safety Alerts" are issued to provide members of the community with crime prevention tips relevant to community events and holidays. Such alerts are also posted during freshman orientation and moving-in days to remind new and returning students of common-sense steps they should take to ensure their own personal safety and the security of their belongings.Crime Alerts and Safety Alerts are issued in two formats – hardcopy and electronic postings. Paper alerts are posted on bulletin boards in all academic buildings and residence halls by staff from the University Police and the Student Life Office. In some academic buildings, alerts are posted on bulletin board space identified as "For Police Use Only." Alerts are removed 30 days after their original posting dates.Electronic postings of the alerts can be found on two university electronic b.boards – cmu.news and official.university-police. The official.university-police b.board serves as an archive for all alerts posted during the current academic year and is purged following commencement.Email BroadcastsTo supplement hardcopy and electronic postings of Crime Alerts, and to ensure maximum dissemination of information about potential risks to the campus, special email broadcasts – or "blasts" – are sometimes issued to all students, faculty and staff. Such broadcasts are sent whenever a crime involves a personal attack upon or physical injury to a member of the university community. These broadcasts will contain the text of the relevant Crime Alert.NewslettersThe University Police Department publishes a newsletter, the "Crime Watch." The newsletter provides a summary of crime during the past month. It also advises the campus about recent crime trends such as con artists or harassing phone calls. Seasonal alerts will be presented to help inform the campus about expected crime. Specialized crime tips will be presented about topics such as how to safely use the Automatic Banking Machines.Crime Prevention EducationThroughout the year, the University Police Crime Prevention Unit is available to present safety and security seminars in residence halls, department offices and any other setting both on and off campus. These seminars can be tailored to meet the needs of the group and can be arranged by calling the University Police at ext. 8-6232 or by email at campuspd@andrew.cmu.edu.The programs conducted by the University Police Crime Prevention Unit are:
