Patrol Services

The Carnegie Mellon University Police provides Patrol Services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The primary function of patrol is deterring criminal activity, property damage, and to provide a rapid response to any incidents in progress. University Police has a primary patrol zone which includes all campus property, Off Campus Housing & Sites, and residential areas immediately in the vicinity of the CMU Main Campus. Patrol methods utilized include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Vehicle Mobile Patrols
  • Foot Patrols
  • Stationary Patrols at fixed Sites
  • Bicycle Patrols

Patrols are conducted by police officers as well as security guards. Various job specific functions are divided across job classifications, but the central goal is the safety and security of the Carnegie Mellon campus community. Patrol personnel are designated a specific area or sector as a primary area to concentrate their time upon each day, but may be re-assigned or given special areas of concern within their sector to focus on to maximize crime prevention efforts. Routine service activities are performed by the Patrol Division, during the course of their assigned duties. These consist of the following:

  • Calls for Service
  • Reports of Crimes that have occurred
  • Reports of Crimes in Progress
  • Reports of Accidents
  • Medical Emergencies

The success of the Patrol Unit is largely dependent on the eyes and ears of the community it serves. Immediate notification facilitates a rapid response. If you see suspicious activity or a crime in progress call the University Police immediately at 412-268-2323.
