Escort/Shuttle

Shuttle/Escort Schedules and Policy -
2007 - 2008 Academic Year

The university operates two separate transportation systems for the convenience and safety of our students – the Shuttle Service and the Escort Service.

bar

SHUTTLE

The Shuttle Service operates two routes – the Oakland route and the Pittsburgh Technology Center (PTC) route.

The Oakland Shuttle

The Oakland shuttle buses operate on a pre-established route that is determined by the locations of official university off-campus housing, and is subject to change from year to year. During the '07-'08 Academic Year, the Oakland shuttle will service Cathedral Mansions, Fairfax Apartments, London & Terrace Apartments, Veronica Apartments, Neville Apartments, Shady Oak Apartments and Webster Hall. The Oakland shuttle also stops at Mellon Institute/SEI (rear loading dock entrance on North Dithridge Street).

Hours of Operation: Daily from 6:45 a.m.-10:15 p.m. (last run departs), both during the academic year and the summer months. No Service (weekends only, Saturday & Sunday) from 10:15 - 10:30 a.m. and 6:15 - 6:45 p.m. (drivers on break).

All shuttles will leave from in front of Morewood Gardens on Morewood Avenue on the quarter hour and three-quarter hour: 7:15 a.m., 7:45 a.m., 8:15 a.m., etc. All shuttle routes take approximately 30 minutes to return to Morewood Gardens. Travel times will vary according to weather and traffic conditions, time of day and day of the week, and the number of stops required according to passenger load at any given time. During the summer months, the Oakland shuttle will operate on the AB route only.

Designated Shuttle Stops

  • Morewood Gardens
  • Mellon Institute/Software Engineering Institute (SEI)
  • Webster Hall/Shirley Apartments
  • London Apartments
  • Terrace Apartments
  • Fairfax Apartments
  • Neville Apartments
  • Cathedral Mansions
  • Veronica Apartments
  • Shady Oak Apartments

The PTC Shuttle

Hours of Operation: Year-round, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.- 2:30 a.m.; Saturday & Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. On weekdays, last run leaves PTC for campus at approximately 2:30 a.m.; on weekends, 5:30 p.m. NO SERVICE (driver on break) from Noon-1 p.m. & 8-9 p.m., Monday-Friday and 2-3 p.m. on Saturday & Sunday.

The PTC shuttle will leave from in front of Morewood Gardens on Morewood Avenue on the hour-9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., etc. - and make one stop on campus, in front of Scaife Hall on Frew Street. The PTC shuttle takes approximately 30-35 minutes to return to the bus depot in front of Morewood Gardens on Morewood Avenue. Because this route includes some heavily traveled, main city thoroughfares, particularly Boulevard of the Allies, travel times will vary according to weather and traffic conditions, time of day and day of the week, and city street construction projects that occur without notice to the university.

Persons waiting to board the shuttle at The PTC should wait in the first floor lobby near the receptionist/Guard desk, or the flag pole (weather permitting).

New Service to LTV Steel, Hazelwood: On May 8, 2006, the PTC shuttle added a regular stop at what is now known as “Robot City,” the former LTV Steel location at 4170 Second Avenue in Hazelwood, where the Planetary Robotics Red Team is now housed. The shuttle will pick up/drop off hourly at the LTV site on the quarter and three-quarter hour. Passengers should board at the old Locomotive Shop.

Service to BIRC: The PTC shuttle also provides service to the Brain Imaging Research Center building (BIRC), 3025 Carson Street, on a limited intermittent, on-request basis. To request to be picked up by the PTC shuttle, BIRC staff and employees must call the police dispatcher on the non-emergency number x8-6232. The dispatcher will contact the PTC shuttle driver by radio and advise the caller of the estimated time that the shuttle will arrive at BIRC. On the return trip from campus to BIRC, board the PTC shuttle at one of the two regular on-campus boarding points, and advise the driver of your destination. BIRC riders will be dropped off after the regular stop at PTC.

SHUTTLE/ESCORT POLICY

  1. All riders must show a valid Carnegie Mellon ID or an Academy for Lifelong Learning (A.L.L.) membership card upon boarding an escort/shuttle vehicle. One guest is permitted with each valid rider.
  2. During the hours when the shuttle is in operation, residents of university off-campus housing are requested to use the shuttle service instead of escort.
  3. The escort service will take you to your residence within a one-and-one-half-mile radius of campus, or transport between any university building, including official university off-campus housing. The escort service does not transport from a private residence or establishment back to campus.
  4. No alcoholic beverages, food or pets are permitted on shuttle/escort vehicles.
  5. Only one piece of carry-on luggage allowed per rider; exceptions made with driver's permission depending upon load capacity.

Transportation Services for Individuals with Disabilities

Carnegie Mellon provides transportation services to disabled members of the campus community. One of the Escort Service vans is equipped with a wheelchair lift that complies with ADA specifications. At least one hour advance notice is required. Passengers requiring the wheelchair lift should specify this need when calling for the Escort Service.

Disabled individuals who need transportation during Escort Service off hours or outside of the Escort Service boundary (1.5 miles around the main campus) are required to give a minimum of 24 hours notice. Such requests will be filled depending upon availability of drivers and handicap-accessible vehicles, and/or provided police officers are not on a higher priority assignment. Call 412-268-6232 or 8-6232 for inquiries or to make arrangements for service.

Holiday Service

Neither the shuttle nor escort services operate on official University holidays and during other designated recess/break periods during the year. During holiday service or no-service days, University Police will provide nighttime escorts if officers are not on other higher priority assignments. For more information, call 412-268-6232.
