#2006-4

October 2, 2006

ASSAULT

University Police were informed yesterday by two male Carnegie Mellon students that they were assaulted while walking through the wooded area behind the Morewood parking lot.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1st, while taking the short cut from the WQED parking lot to campus, the two students came upon a group of 5 white males who apparently were harassing a male and a female, and told the group to stop. When the couple being harassed walked away, the group assaulted the two Carnegie Mellon students. One of the assailants struck the students with a baseball bat. After the group fled, the students returned to campus. Neither required medical attention..

The assailants were described only as being white males in their late teens or early twenties. While this description is too vague to be of immediate value, if you witnessed any unusual activity around that time on Sunday night, or if you have any information that might assist police in this case, please call Detective Martin White, University Police, at x8-6232.
.

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS:

  • Never walk in dark, isolated areas off the beaten track at night!
  • Avoid "shortcuts" - stay on well-lit streets.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings at all times.
  • Watch for strangers you encounter suddenly. If the situation makes you uncomfortable or you sense that the person(s) may present a threat to your safety, call University Police before continuing, or turn around and go in another direction and then call.
  • Use the Carnegie Mellon Shuttle or Escort Service.
