ARMED ROBBERY - (Off Campus)

Carnegie Mellon University Police were informed early this morning that two Carnegie Mellon students were robbed at gunpoint shortly after midnight while walking home to their off-campus residence.

At approximately 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24th, the victims were walking along Wightman Street when they came upon three males standing on the sidewalk near the intersection at Sol Way (just behind the CVS pharmacy). One suspect pulled a silver colored semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the head of one of the victims. After obtaining cash and credit cards from both victims, all three suspects got into a silver-blue colored mid-sized car occupied by a fourth suspect that was waiting for them and left the scene. The victims were not harmed.

The victims described two of the suspects as black males, 18-20 years old, 6 feet tall, dark complected, wearing black sweat pants and black hoodies. A third suspect was described as a black male, approximately 13 years old, 5'6" tall, 125 lbs., thin build, wearing the same clothing. If you see the above described suspects or have any information about this case, notify City Police by calling 9-1-1 (reference Case #27785) or University Police immediately on (412) 268-2323 or x8-2323!

Since this crime occurred more than a mile from campus, it would normally not be the subject of a campus alert. However, in light of the Feb. 8th arrest of a suspect for over 20 recent armed street robberies, University Police felt it important to inform you about the incident.

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

  • Never walk in isolated, unpopulated areas late at night! Local criminals know that many Carnegie Mellon students live in North Oakland, Shadyside, and Squirrel Hill. Walking the streets after midnight is simply asking to become another crime victim.
  • Pay attention to strangers you see up ahead after dark. If more than one person is standing on the street directly in your path and don't appear to be moving, assume they are up to no good! Turn around and go in the other direction, or cross the street, and DON'T STOP - RUN!
  • If confronted by an armed assailant, don't resist. Do what he tells you and give him everything he asks for. Money can be replaced - you can't be!
