Crime Alert

#2006-1

July 14, 2006

Simple Assaults - Vandalism
Flagstaff Hill - Schenley Park

University Police have been informed by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police that over the past nine days several criminal incidents have occurred after dark in and immediately adjacent to the section of Schenley Park known as Flagstaff Hill. These crimes have occurred both during and shortly after the conclusion of the City of
Pittsburgh's "Movies in the Park" nights that are staged on flagstaff Hill. At least three motor vehicles parked on Frew Street were damaged and/or broken into, and in two separate incidents students attending CMU summer programs have been the victims of minor assaults.

In the first case, on July 5th at approximately 10:50 p.m., a Governor's School student reported that he was jumped from behind by three Black males in their teens, who ran off when the victim yelled for help. In the second case, on July 10th at approximately 10:30 p.m., a Pre-College student reported that he was jumped by two Black males in their teens, who similarly ran off when the victim's friend ran to his aid. Neither victim was injured or required medical attention.

University Police will be working with Pittsburgh Police for the rest of the summer (through August 27th) to supplement and enhance police presence on the perimeter of Flagstaff Hill to help prevent further incidents after the movies conclude.

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS:

  • Never walk in isolated areas late at night! Use the "buddy system" - walk in pairs or groups.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings at all times. Watch for strangers you encounter suddenly. Just keep on walking and don't look back. DON'T STOP - RUN! And yell, scream, make noise!.
