CRIME ALERT #2004-2

August 30, 2004

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT

Carnegie Mellon University Police received a report from a student that he was struck by an unknown object early Saturday morning while walking on The Cut.

At 1:04 a.m., on Saturday, August 28, a Carnegie Mellon student walked into the University Police station to report that at approximately 12:58 a.m. something had struck his arm while he and another student were walking on the sidewalk from the north end of the University Center toward Warner Hall. The victim reported hearing a "popping" sound to his left before an unknown type of projectile struck his left bicep. Neither the victim nor his companion reported seeing anyone nearby or any unusual activity prior to the incident. Other unidentified persons were reportedly on The Cut at the time but no additional witnesses could be immediately located. Carnegie Mellon Student EMS personnel on the scene determined that the victim's injury was consistent with what would be produced by a BB or pellet gun. The victim was taken to UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital for treatment of a minor wound to his left upper arm and was later released.

Anyone who was on The Cut last Saturday morning from between 12:55 and 1:05 a.m. or has any information about this case is asked to contact Detective Sharon Hutchings, University Police, immediately on x8-4185/(412) 268-4185 or via email at sk26@andrew.cmu.edu.
