Powerhouse Symposium To Preview Energy Institute

By Piper Staff

The global energy landscape presents complex challenges. That's where Carnegie Mellon comes in.

With the university's longstanding expertise in energy, technology, public policy and integrated systems, and its ability to seamlessly combine these areas to create innovative, real-world solutions, Carnegie Mellon is well suited to make a significant impact.

CMU President Jared L. Cohon and faculty experts from across the university will provide the first look at CMU's new energy institute on Friday, Sept. 21, during a campus-wide energy symposium at 4:30 p.m. at Rashid Auditorium. The symposium is titled "From Technology to Policy: Energy Research at Carnegie Mellon."

The new energy institute - which will be led for at least the next two years by Granger Morgan, director, and Andrew Gellman, associate director - will harness research expertise from across the university to focus on the long-term challenge of transitioning from the fossil fuel energy economy of today to a sustainable energy future.

Open to all of campus, as well as alumni and corporate partners, the energy symposium will feature faculty from various schools and colleges discussing their energy-related work. A reception featuring assorted refreshments will follow. All guests are encouraged to RSVP at cmu.edu/event/energy.

The energy institute will be housed in a new research facility, nestled between Hamerschlag, Wean and Roberts Engineering halls. The 100,000-square-foot building, which is expected to be completed in 2015, also will include the Biomedical Engineering Department and a nanotechnology fabrication lab.
