CFA Winter Festival Celebrates the Arts at CMU

The College of Fine Arts (CFA) will open its doors to the campus community, alumni, friends and the general public for the CFA Winter Festival beginning Monday, Dec. 7, through the weekend of Dec. 11-13. The festival features events and programs from all schools and programs in the college celebrating the talented work of current students.

Here’s a schedule of events:

Miller Gallery & School of Design

The Miller Gallery and the School of Design jointly present “Mind the Matter: CMU School of Design 2015 Senior Exhibition" from Saturday, Dec. 5 through Sunday, Dec. 13. On Friday, Dec. 11, the exhibit will be open from noon-6 p.m., followed by a reception celebrating the students’ work from 6-8 p.m. Both are open to the public.

School of Drama

Music ConcertThe School of Drama’s annual Playground performances will take place in the Purnell Center from Monday, Dec. 7, through Saturday, Dec. 12, so people can take advantage of these groundbreaking student works all week. Tickets to performances will be available every 30 minutes, so stop by to see something new and original.

School of Music

The combined forces of Carnegie Mellon’s Philharmonic and Chorus will perform a wide variety of music at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. This seasonal concert conducted by Andrés Cárdenes, Daniel Nesta Curtis and Thomas W. Douglas will feature Poulenc’s “Gloria” and include music by Gershwin, Debussy and Ravel. The concert also will feature the world premiere of a holiday choral and orchestral work by composer Mike Garson. The concert will be repeated at noon Friday, Dec. 11, in CFA’s Great Hall on campus. The concerts are sponsored in part by TIAA-CREF.

BXA Intercollege Degree Programs

The BXA Intercollege Degree Programs will present “Seminar I: Remixing the Wunderkammer Exhibition” from 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, in CFA Room 303. BXA first-year seminar students invite attendees to explore topics such as context, representation across media, remix and adaptation, ideology/ideologies, dream logic and reality, aesthetic vocabularies, collections and curation, intellectual property, and the instability of meaning.

Influenced by Derrida, Althusser, Benjamin, Jay Z, Abramovic, Vi Hart, Freud, Marx, YouTube, Weschler, Thomas Browne, Austin Kleon, Michel Gondry, and many other artists and thinkers, this show is the culmination of a semester spent thinking about the interdisciplinary nature of creative and scholarly life. Free and open to the public.

Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry

The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry will host the "Exhibition of Student Works in Experimental Capture" from 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, in the STUDIO, first floor, CFA. The exhibit features works from this fall's Experimental Capture course in which undergraduate and graduate students used advanced techniques in photogrammetry, lidar and high-speed photography to create digital artwork, representing CMU's expertise at the intersection of arts and technology.

School of Art

The School of Art will host its annual Open Studio Day from 5-10 p.m. Friday Dec 11, on the third and fourth floors of the CFA Building. Student artwork is available for purchase during Open Studio and refreshments will be served. These future master artists offer beautiful, thoughtful and creative works that make great gifts at the holidays or any time of year.

Future Tenant Art Gallery

On Friday, Dec. 11, Mia Nichols will represent the Heinz College through an information table on Future Tenant. Nichols, an officer of Future Tenant, will offer details on upcoming Future Tenant programs and the Heinz Masters in Arts Management program. On Friday night, Future Tenant will unveil its new window exhibits at its downtown Penn Avenue location.

School of Architecture

The School of Architecture will feature student work on Dec. 11 in the CFA Building on both the north and south second floor stair landings. The CFA200 third-, fourth- and fifth-year studio students will be working in full force toward their final review deadlines happening on Monday, Dec. 14, so there will be plenty to see!
