50+ Top Law Schools To Visit for Second Annual Law School Fair
The university’s second annual Law School Fair will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Friday, Sept. 28 in the University Center’s Wiegand Gym. Students, particularly juniors, seniors and alumni thinking of applying to law school in 2013 or 2014, will have the opportunity to meet and discuss options with the schools’ representatives.
In addition to the fair, three workshops will be offered. Topics are the evolving nature of the legal job market, L.S.A.T. preparation strategies and strategies for writing strong personal statements for law school applications.
Students and alumni can register to attend the Law School Fair via TartanTrak. In addition, juniors, seniors and alumni have the option of uploading a resume to TartanTrak that law school representatives will be able to access as a collective “Carnegie Mellon Pre-law Resume Book.”

The Law School Fair is sponsored by the university’s Pre-Law Program, which provides support and related activities and outlets for students and alumni with interests in law. The program has two components that work in partnership: an advising program and the student pre-law society. Read more about the program.
SEI Leases Office Space at Bakery Square
Carnegie Mellon’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI) recently signed a lease for about 38,000 square feet in Bakery Square, making the development’s office space 100 percent leased. The SEI joins Google, the UPMC Technology Development Center, the University Of Pittsburgh Department Of Rehabilitation Science & Technology and the VA Human Engineering Research Laboratories in the LEED Platinum Certified Office Building at Bakery Square. Paul Nielsen, director and chief executive officer of the SEI, said in a press release that the additional space is part of preparations for anticipated growth in the SEI’s software engineering and cybersecurity programs. In addition to its main office near CMU’s Pittsburgh campus, the SEI has offices in Arlington, Va., Los Angeles and Frankfurt, Germany.
Computer Sales Closed for Inventory Oct. 1
Computer Sales in the University Store will be conducting its quarterly inventory and will be closed Monday, Oct. 1. Computer Sales will reopen for business on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
Carnegie Clan Seeks Teams for Chili Cook-Off
The Carnegie Clan is seeking teams for its annual Chili Cook-Off Competition from noon to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6 during Céilidh weekend. Each team that participates in the competition will need to make at least two quarts of chili that will be judged by all students and alumni who attend the event. Four prizes will be awarded including a People's Choice Award. For more details and to register your team, email Rachel Bordin at rbordin@andrew.cmu.edu. Honorary Degree Nominations Due Oct. 15
You can now nominate candidates to receive honorary degrees from Carnegie Mellon. Nominees must have achieved pre-eminent levels of distinction in fields identified with educational, research or performance programs at CMU. They also must have demonstrated respect and appreciation for the responsibilities of citizenship and service to society. Honorary degrees are granted to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to their professions, to the U.S. or to the world, and whose life and work are broadly connected to the highest aims and aspirations of the university.
It is desirable that nominees have connections to the university, and nominations of women and underrepresented minorities are especially welcome. Nominations are due Oct. 15. For more information, including the nomination form, go to http://www.cmu.edu/honorary/.
Nominations Now Open for Education Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the Doherty Award, the Ryan Award, the Academic Advising Award and the Gelfand Award, which will be presented on April 30, 2013.
- The Robert E. Doherty Award for Sustained Contributions to Excellence in Education is given to a member of the university community who has made substantial and sustained contributions to excellence in education.
- The William H. and Frances S. Ryan Award for Meritorious Teaching is given annually to a full-time faculty member who has demonstrated unusual devotion and effectiveness in teaching undergraduate or graduate students.
- The Academic Advising Award recognizes members of the university community who have achieved excellence in providing undergraduate academic advising.
- The Gelfand Award is given annually to a member of the university community who has combined sustained, effective community service with academic coursework and a deliberate process of student reflection to enhance the learning experience, teach social responsibility, and improve some aspect of life in the community.
