Randy Bryant, dean of the School of Computer Science (SCS), will deliver a State of the School Address at 4 p.m. today (Feb. 23) in the Hillman Center’s Rashid Auditorium during the first SCS Founders' Day. The event also will provide an opportunity to recognize significant achievements by faculty and staff.
The school’s Allen Newell Award for Research Excellence and the Herbert A. Simon Award for Teaching Excellence in Computer Science both will be announced during the program, as will staff recognition awards. Recently awarded faculty chairs and external awards to faculty members will be recognized. A reception will follow the program.
The School of Design invites members of the university and Pittsburgh communities to participate in the national Global Service Jam, a service and design activity that will take place simultaneously in 90 cities, including Pittsburgh, Feb. 24-26. People interested in service and using a design-based approach to problem solving and creativity will meet in Pittsburgh at the School of Design in Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall this weekend. Teams will have 48 hours to develop brand new services inspired by a shared theme. On Sunday at 3 p.m., the collection of new services will be published on the Web. Seats remain for the March 2 and March 21 AED/CPR classes sponsored by Environmental Health & Safety. The March 2 class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in Rangos 2, University Center. The March 21 class will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. in Rangos 2. Some people have indicated that they are reluctant to attend a class of this nature because of the danger of being sued. Pennsylvania has a Good Samaritan law that prevents this from happening, and nobody would be held liable should they unsuccessfully use an AED.
The Student Services Suite (S3) team will hold a town hall meeting for academic departments and administrative staff highlighting significant changes to the S3 Admin Console related to registration, including SIS screen retirement. The meeting will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, March 7 in McConomy Auditorium, University Center.
The upcoming S3 release represents the most significant release of functionality to the S3 Admin Console to date. The new features include: student registration/Add/Drop, adviser and max units management, registration holds; waitlist maintenance; course message; course reservations; and course drops. Online registration (OLR), currently used by students, will be integrated into SIO with the S3 release in March 2012. Students will use SIO registration for all summer and fall 2012 registration activities.

Students with a great sustainable idea could win up to $20,000 by winning The Odebrecht Award for Sustainable Development. The award program is accepting entries from students in engineering fields, architecture, building and construction management, and chemistry. Whether related to efficient uses of sustainable materials, new chemical processes or new building techniques, projects should explore innovative practices, methods and ideas that can be implemented in a variety of real-world ventures. Entries will be judged on content, technical contribution, applicability, clarity/presentation and reasoning/depth. Entries are due May 31. Weekend buggy freeroll practices will continue through Sunday, April 15. Weather permitting, practices will take place from 6 to 8:50 a.m. on Saturdays and from 6 to 9 a.m. on Sundays.
