Images of flattened buildings, muddy tent camps and desperate, homeless people have dominated the world's view of Haiti since an earthquake shook Port-au-Prince in January 2010. But the September issue of Carnegie Mellon's online GigaPan Magazine features interactive panoramas of the central Artibonite Valley, its villages and Hôpital Albert Schweitzer that provide an alternative view of Haitian life. The magazine, http://gigapanmagazine.org/, a publication of the CREATE Lab at the Robotics Institute, includes images of the valley's landscapes, a market in the town of Deschapelles and the hospital. Internationally acclaimed artists and curators whose work and research span performance and sound art, public sculpture, human-computer interaction and subversions of public media are featured in the School of Art’s fall lecture series. From Oct. 21-23, the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry will conduct the third episode in its conference series, “ART && CODE,” with a theme of “DIY 3D Sensing and Visualization.” Hands-on workshops, lecture presentations and audiovisual performances will focus on creative coding, digital culture and Kinect hacking. Hands-on workshops are generally $80 for each two-hour session and include arts-engineering classes in programming toolkits such as Processing, openFrameworks, Max/MSP, PureData, Arduino, C++, C# and Scratch.

University Health Services is offering seasonal flu vaccine to students, faculty, staff and spouses/partners. Bring your CMU ID card. Vaccine clinics will be hosted at several convenient campus locations, including the University Center, Heinz College, Tepper School and Mellon Institute. The first clinic is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Health Services. Visit www.cmu.edu/health-services for a complete listing of clinics, as well as flu prevention materials. Human Resources will cover the vaccine cost for staff and faculty; the CMU student insurance plan will cover the vaccine cost for students on the plan. The cost is $17 for spouses/partners and students on other plans.
