Images of flattened buildings, muddy tent camps and desperate, homeless people have dominated the world's view of Haiti since an earthquake shook Port-au-Prince in January 2010. But the September issue of Carnegie Mellon's online GigaPan Magazine features interactive panoramas of the central Artibonite Valley, its villages and Hôpital Albert Schweitzer that provide an alternative view of Haitian life. The magazine, http://gigapanmagazine.org/, a publication of the CREATE Lab at the Robotics Institute, includes images of the valley's landscapes, a market in the town of Deschapelles and the hospital. Internationally acclaimed artists and curators whose work and research span performance and sound art, public sculpture, human-computer interaction and subversions of public media are featured in the School of Art’s fall lecture series. Hands-on workshops are generally $80 for each two-hour session and include arts-engineering classes in programming toolkits such as Processing, openFrameworks, Max/MSP, PureData, Arduino, C++, C# and Scratch.
