Personal Mention

Laurie Barkman (GSIA'99) has been named the 2013 Alumna of the Year by the Tepper Women in Business Club. The award recognizes a Tepper School or Graduate School of Industrial Administration (GSIA) alumna for their exemplary professionalism, leadership and outstanding contibutions to the community. Barkman, vice president of marketing for The Resumator, has been an energetic leader on the Tepper School's Alumni Board and is known for making and advancing connections between students and professional companies and entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. The award will be presented by Tepper School Dean Bob Dammon on April 19. Read more.

National security and political strategy expert Kiron Skinner wrote an opinion piece for CNN.com titled, "Margaret Thatcher led in fighting terrorism." Skinner, associate professor of social and decision sciences and director of CMU's Center for International Relations and Politics, writes that Thatcher gave crucial support to anti-terror efforts, backed Ronald Reagan's retaliation against Libya and was an early, prescient voice on terrorism's threat to the West. Alumna Faith Hall (DC'02) and graduate student Riley Ohlson (HNZ'13) have been named Robert Bosch Foundation Fellows. The fellowship program is designed to provide young American leaders with a yearlong professional exchange program in Germany and the European Union. Following an intensive language instruction period in their hometowns, the fellows will spend the summer in Berlin receiving group language training. In September, they will begin a series of three professional seminars across Europe and two work assignments at leading German institutions. Read more.

Obituary:

Carol Hamilton, former assistant professor of English, died April 10 after a long battle with cancer. Hamilton most recently was a lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh. She published a wide range of writing, including scholarly articles, arts reviews, op-ed pieces and two chapbooks of poetry. She also published poems in many literary journals, including "The North American Review," "Poetry Miscellany," "Salmagundi" and "The Paris Review."  A book of poems, "Blindsight," was published in 2005 by Carnegie Mellon University Press. A memorial will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 21 in the Rachel Mellon Walton Room, Posner Hall. Read the obituary in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at http://bit.ly/15lWwfG.
