Magazine and Piper Win Awards

Carnegie Mellon Today (CMT) magazine and the Piper, CMU’s monthly faculty/staff newspaper, won a combined six Golden Triangle Awards at the International Association of Business Communicators banquet last week. CMT won awards for excellence in the magazine and feature writing categories ("Immortal Gift," Sept. 2011) and honor awards for design and its "First Word" column. The Piper won an Award for Excellence for its logo and an Award of Honor in the Newspapers, Tabloids and Newsletters category.

C-MITES Celebrates 20 Years

Parking Hosts Bike Community Forum Oct. 9

Parking & Transportation Services will host its first lunch and learn Bike Community Forum, in partnership with BikePGH, from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the Peter Room, University Center. The Bike Commuting Forum is an opportunity for the Carnegie Mellon community to meet with representatives from BikePGH to discuss, learn, and share stories about how to make your bike commute as comfortable, convenient and safe as possible. Bring your lunch and P&TS will supply the dessert, as we broaden our scope on biking as an alternative mode of transportation to get to campus.

Annual Security Report Available

Carnegie Mellon University's 2012 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is available on the Web at http://www.cmu.edu/police/images/2012asr.pdf. As required by federal and state law, the annual report includes statistics for the previous three calendar years — 2009 to 2011 — on reported crimes that occurred on campuses or at degree program locations; in certain off-campus buildings owned or controlled by Carnegie Mellon; and on public property within, immediately adjacent to, and accessible from those locations. The report also contains university campus safety and security policies and information on crime prevention education and awareness, fire safety, emergency response, the reporting of crimes and fires, and sexual assault support services. A printed copy of the report can be requested by calling University Police at 412-268-6232 or sending email to campuspd@andrew.cmu.edu.

Students Must Register To Vote by Oct. 9

Dean of Student Affairs Gina Casalegno, Philosophy Professor Andy Norman and Student Body President Will Weiner sent email to Pittsburgh campus students last week about the registration process to vote in the upcoming election. Norman is asking faculty and staff to encourage students to register by the Oct. 9 deadline and to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 6. EH&S Offers AED Training

Environmental Health & Safety has scheduled three more Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training classes for those who are interested in updating their certification, or for anyone who has never had the training. The classes are:

  • 10 am – noon, Oct. 17, Rangos 1, UC
  • 10 am – noon, Oct. 31, McKenna Room, UC
  • 10 am – noon, Nov. 21, Connan Room, UC

Classes last about two hours and include training in CPR.  To register for any of these classes, go to www.cmu.edu/ehs, click on the Training tab at the top of the page, then click on AED Training. At the end of the course description is a link to the registration page.

CMU has 65 AEDs at various locations on campus. These devices are to be used on anyone whose heart is in fibrillation, or who has gone into cardiac arrest. They have saved lives.

Responsible Conduct of Research Seminars Slated

Four new Responsible Conduct of Research Seminars have been scheduled. All seminars will be held from noon – 1 p.m. in the University Center’s McKenna Room. The seminar dates, topics and presenters are:

  • Oct. 11: International Research Considerations: Stories from the Field — Professor Bernadine Dias
  • Oct. 16: Research with Human Subjects — Professor David Danks, IRB Chair
  • Oct. 25: Intellectual Property: Rights and Responsibilities at CMU — Susan Burkett (retired OSP AVP)
  • Nov. 8: Research Misconduct Lessons — Ann Mathias, AVP Research Integrity and Compliance

Alumni Association Board Seeks New Members

The Alumni Association Board (AAB) seeks nominations for their 2013 class. They will elect five new members to serve four-year terms beginning July 1, 2013, and strive to balance the board along a number of dimensions such as college affiliation, year of graduation, gender, ethnicity and geographic representation. In addition, the board gives particular weight to the depth and breadth of the nominee's current and previous volunteer experiences, in particular those with CMU. Honorary Degree Nominations Due Oct. 15

You can now nominate candidates to receive honorary degrees from Carnegie Mellon. Nominees must have achieved pre-eminent levels of distinction in fields identified with educational, research or performance programs at CMU. They also must have demonstrated respect and appreciation for the responsibilities of citizenship and service to society. Honorary degrees are granted to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to their professions, to the U.S. or to the world, and whose life and work are broadly connected to the highest aims and aspirations of the university.
 
It is desirable that nominees have connections to the university, and nominations of women and underrepresented minorities are especially welcome. Nominations are due Oct. 15. For more information, including the nomination form, go to http://www.cmu.edu/honorary/.

Nominations Now Open for Education Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the Doherty Award, the Ryan Award, the Academic Advising Award and the Gelfand Award, which will be presented on April 30, 2013.

  • The Robert E. Doherty Award for Sustained Contributions to Excellence in Education is given to a member of the university community who has made substantial and sustained contributions to excellence in education.
  • The William H. and Frances S. Ryan Award for Meritorious Teaching is given annually to a full-time faculty member who has demonstrated unusual devotion and effectiveness in teaching undergraduate or graduate students.
  • The Academic Advising Award recognizes members of the university community who have achieved excellence in providing undergraduate academic advising.
  • The Gelfand Award is given annually to a member of the university community who has combined sustained, effective community service with academic coursework and a deliberate process of student reflection to enhance the learning experience, teach social responsibility, and improve some aspect of life in the community.
