Alumni Nominated for Tony Awards

Christian Borle and Judith Light, both graduates of the School of Drama, were nominated for Tony Awards, Broadway's highest honor. Borle, who appeared in "Peter and the Starcatcher," was nominated for the best performance by an actor in a featured role in a play. Light, who appeared in "Other Desert Cities," was nominated for best performance by an actress in a featured role in a play. CMU alumna Kara Lindsay appeared in "Newsies" and Leslie Odom, Jr. appeared in "Leap of Faith," which were nominated for best musical. Parking Open Enrollment Extended Through May 15

Open enrollment (click on Enrollment in the left-hand navigation column) for campus parking permits has been extended through May 15.  Anyone wanting an individual permit to park on campus during the coming year, including those seeking a disability or universal permit, must apply using your Andrew ID and the online system. Individuals applying for a carpool must complete a paper application, which can be faxed (412-268-7825) or returned to the University Center Parking Office. Staff Council To Hold Second Election for Divisional Reps

Due to the fact that late additions were made to the recent Staff Council ballot for divisional representatives, inconsistencies exist in the results. Therefore, to uphold the integrity of elections, Staff Council has declared these results invalid and a new election is now under way through noon, Monday, May 21. To cast your ballot for your divisional representatives, go to https://elections.andrew.cmu.edu/

Researchers Challenge Post-marketing Trial Practices

Current research ethics focuses on protecting study participants, but according to bioethicists from Carnegie Mellon University and McGill University, these efforts fail to prevent problems that undermine the social value of research.

Published in Science, CMU's Alex John London, and McGill's Jonathan Kimmelman and Benjamin Carlisle argue that current research ethics frameworks do not flag drug trials that, while not putting patients at risk, produce biased evidence. As an example, they point to phase IV research — when pharmaceutical companies test drugs and devices that have been approved for marketing. They insist that without an adequate system of checks in place, phase IV trials will continue to be used by drug companies to market products without generating the information that clinicians and policy makers can use to improve care and maintain a more cost-effective health system. CMU To Host Pittsburgh Ultimate Frisbee Camp

This summer, CMU will again play host to Camp Spirit of the Game, Pittsburgh’s Ultimate Frisbee camp for kids.  Professionally run by Andy Norman of CMU’s Philosophy Department, Camp Spirit features an introduction to the sport, and a fun assortment of swimming, games and lessons in constructive conflict resolution. Seeking 2012 Andy Award Nominations

Nominations for the 2012 Andy Awards are now being accepted. The Andy Awards, named for Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon, are a tribute to the spirit of teamwork and dedication embodied by the staff at Carnegie Mellon. Individual staff members and teams of colleagues whose work has had a significant impact on the university are recognized for their outstanding performance and commitment to excellence through the Andy Awards program. Awards are given in six categories: Dedication, Commitment to Students, Innovation, Culture and University Citizenship, and Community Contributions. All nominations must be submitted by July 10. Carnegie Mellon Women's Association Seeks Nominations for Officer Elections

The Carnegie Mellon Women's Association (CMWA) will hold its annual meeting and officer elections from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, May 24 in the Peter Room, University Center. Members are invited to bring a brown bag lunch, but desserts will be provided.
