Tom Bohman Named Head of Mathematical Sciences

Tom BohmanTom Bohman has been named the new head of the Mellon College of Science’s Department of Mathematical Sciences. Under this appointment he also will receive the Alexander M. Knaster Professorship, which was established in 2006 to recognize the departmental leadership of the head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  Bohman succeeds Roy Nicolaides who served as department head from 2002 through May 2011. During the interim, Bill Hrusa served as acting department head.

Bohman joined the CMU faculty in 1998 as an assistant professor and became a full professor in 2009. He conducts research on extremal and probalistic combinatorics, focusing on discrete math problems inspired by diverse mathematical disciplines, as well as information theory, statistical physics and theoretical computer science.

Bohman is well known for his commitment to teaching. In 2011 Bohman won the Julius Ashkin Teaching Award from the Mellon College of Science in recognition of his devotion and effectiveness in teaching undergraduate students.
