Athletics To Host Faculty and Staff Family Day Sunday, Feb. 19

The Department of Athletics invites all faculty, staff and their families to Faculty and Staff Family Day on Sunday, Feb. 19 during the men's and women's basketball games against the University of Rochester. The men's game starts at noon with the women's tip set for 2 p.m. in Skibo Gymnasium. All children in attendance will receive a free mini basketball and have the chance to play on the court during each halftime. Come out for a fantastic afternoon of basketball!

CMU-Qatar Launches Three New Lecture Series

Carnegie Mellon Qatar Dean Ilker Baybars has announced the launch of three new distinguished lecture series named after former deans of Carnegie Mellon — A. Nico Habermann, Richard M. Cyert and John Patrick Crecine. The inaugural A. Nico Habermann Distinguished Lecture in Computer Science was delivered on Jan. 31 by Dean of the School of Computer Science and University Professor Randy Bryant. His talk, titled "Data–Intensive Scalable Computing," was attended by approximately 100 faculty, students and guests from Qatar Foundation and the local community. Dean Bryant is currently spending one week in Doha as the first Distinguished-Scholar-in-Residence. He is sharing his knowledge and experiences with the faculty, post docs and students of Carnegie Mellon Qatar. In the future, Dietrich College Dean John Lehoczky will speak at the John Patrick Crecine Distinguished Lecture in Social Sciences and Tepper School of Business Technology Professor Jay Apt will speak at the Richard M. Cyert Distinguished Lecture in Business Management.

Nominations Sought for Student Employee of the Year Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) Award, sponsored by the Northeast Association of Student Employment Administrators (NEASEA) and the National Student Employment Association (NSEA). This is the 13th year that Carnegie Mellon is participating in the program, which recognizes the outstanding contributions of college students who work while attending college.  All student employees, undergraduate and graduate, are eligible. The application deadline is Feb. 20.

EH&S Sponsors AED/CPR Training Classes

Environmental Health & Safety has announced three additional AED/CPR training classes:

  • Feb. 16, 10 a.m. – noon, Wean Hall 5310                  
  • March 2, 10 a.m. – noon, Location TBD                       
  • March 21, 1 – 3 p.m., Rangos 2, University Center

Weight Watchers at Work Session Begins Feb. 8

A new Weight Watchers at Work session begins Feb. 8. The cost is $39.95/month, which includes access to e-tools. Twenty members are needed to start the new session. If interested in joining, please contact Rita Motor (rita@cmu.edu).

BRIDGES Program Helps Middle School Students Learn About Research

Fifth Year Scholar Rachel Inman has developed BRIDGES, a series of Saturday morning workshops to help middle school students learn about research in a variety of career areas. In the workshops, Carnegie Mellon undergraduates will share information about their experiences before and during college, and present information about original research, engaging the students with research-related hands-on activities.

There is no cost to participate in the BRIDGES workshops, which are held on Carnegie Mellon’s campus from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Twelve spaces are available for each program and it is not necessary to participate in all 12 workshop sessions.   

BRIDGES workshop dates for this spring are: Feb. 25, March 24, March 31, April 14 and April 28. See the Gelfand Center website for registration information

Carnegie Mellon Today Magazine Honored by Public Relations Society

Carnegie Mellon Today magazine received two awards at the Pittsburgh Public Relations Society of America Pittsburgh Chapter’s Annual Renaissance Awards dinner last Thursday at the Fairmont Hotel, downtown. It received the Renaissance Award for External Publications for the third consecutive year and fourth time in the past five years. It also won the Award of Merit for Opinion/Editorial. Overall, the magazine has won 57 editorial awards since 2007. Read more about the awards.

Nominations Open for Graduate Student Awards

The Graduate Student Service and Teaching Award nominations are now open and will be due on Friday, Feb. 10. The committees would greatly appreciate your support in soliciting and submitting nominations of graduate students who have excelled in teaching or service so that their efforts can be recognized by the university community. Nomination information can be found at http://www.cmu.edu/celebration-of-education/graduate-student/index.html. Awards will be presented on Thursday, April 5, at the "Innovation with Impact: Graduate Student Celebration of Research, Teaching and Service" during Graduate Student Appreciation Week. Recipients will also be recognized at the Celebration of Education on Wednesday, April 25.

Washington Semester Program Seeks Public Policy-Minded Students

Undergraduates from any course of study who would value firsthand public policy experience are invited to apply to CMU’s Washington Semester Program (WSP), sponsored by the university's Center for International Relations and Politics. In this semester-long program, students live, work and study in Washington, D.C., coming into direct contact with political, business and community leaders, and learning about the most pressing policy issues of the day. WSP information sessions will be held today (Feb. 2); Tuesday, Feb. 7; and Wednesday, Feb. 22. All sessions will take place from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. in Baker Hall 154R. Refreshments will be provided.
