Heinz College Dean Ramayya Krishnan, the William W. and Ruth F. Cooper Professor of Management Science and Information Systems, has received the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) Information Systems Society Distinguished Fellow Award in recognition of his intellectual contributions to the information systems discipline. His current research projects investigate risk management in business process design and in information security, social network analysis in settings ranging from call data records to knowledge sharing communities, consumer behavior in e-business settings, and the design of policies that take into account the competing needs of promoting data access and protecting privacy.

Miller Gallery Director Astria Suparak was selected to participate in the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative at The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. The interview series, titled “Pigeons on the Grass, Alas: Contemporary Curators Talk About the Field,” focuses on curators and their individual practices. The Pew Center selected Suparak because her work “reflects the values” that guide the Pew Center, “excellence, imagination and courage.” 

“OUT OF RUBBLE,” curated by Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Art Susanne Slavick, premieres from 6 – 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 2 at the SPACE Gallery in Pittsburgh. The exhibit presents the work of international artists who consider the consequences of war, from decimation and disintegration to the possibilities of regeneration and recovery. The exhibit includes several events, including a performance by MillerDANCE at 8:30 p.m., Dec. 9-10 and a pre-performance conversation at 8 p.m., Dec. 10 with Slavick, Pittsburgh Magazine Dance Editor Karen Dacko and company director Mary Miller. Enrique Graf, artist lecturer in piano, was the featured soloist in the world premiere this past Monday (Nov. 14) of a new concerto for piano and orchestra by Florencia Di Concilio, a young composer from Uruguay, at the Solis Theatre in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Carnegie Mellon was well represented at the first annual TEDx Alva Park Conference at the Henry Ford Innovation Institute in Detroit. Presentations were made by ETC Executive Producer Don Marinelli; author, Wall Street Journal columnist and CMU alumnus Jeff Zaslow; and CMU alumnus Steve  Selzer, senior interaction designer at Frog studios. Joining the CMU contingent were notables: astronaut/cosmonaut Leroy Chiao; Patricia  Mooradian, president of the Henry Ford Museum; and Lyn St. James, first female race car driver at the Indianapolis 500 and founder of  the Women in the Winners Circle Foundation. In addition, Marinelli was the keynote  speaker at the Chief Information Officer (CIO) Summit at the Henry Ford Hotel in Detroit. His address was titled "Creative Engineers: The Next Generation of  IT."
