Ido Roll, PIER (associate) * HCII  (Advisors: Ken Koedinger, Vince Aleven)
Graduated (10/09)
Current position-Postdoc, Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative and the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of British Columbia
Dissertation Title-Structured Invention Activities to Prepare Students for Future Learning: Means, Mechanisms, and Cognitive Processes

His background includes a B.Sc. in Math and Physics from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Human-Factors Engineering experience, volunteering in several social-justice organizations and teaching.
Armed with a scientific approach, technological tools, a curious mind, and a respect for students, Ido is on a quest to understand how people learn to learn and how such learning can be fostered using Intelligent Tutoring Systems. The path to significantly improving education, he argues, is through promoting general learning skills and a passion for knowledge. He has been working on improving the help-seeking skills of students using Cognitive Tutors, a form of Intelligent Tutoring System, and on identifying students learning and performance goals. Currently Ido works on modeling students’ behavior in an open simulation environment in order to support students in their exploratory learning phases.
The PIER program created a community of students who study different aspects of the learning sciences. Belonging to this community gives Ido the opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and interests, and to exchange ideas on a common fruitful ground.
People might be surprised to know that the best teacher Ido has ever had is only 15 months old, and happen to be his daughter.
