Benjamin Shih, CALD.(Advisors: Ken Koedinger, Richard Scheines)
5th yr PIER-5th yr MLD
Benjamin graduated in Spring 2005 from the University of Washington with a bachelor's in Computer Science and Applied Computational Mathematical Science.  His research experience ranges from applied data mining to paper-and-pencil theory.  He has interests in the application of machine learning techniques to the improvement and increased automation of educational technologies.  His present research lies at the intersection of causal discovery techniques and educational technologies.

He hopes to one day expand the scope of educational technology into general use - specifically, he wants to develop systems that facilitate active learning outside of traditionally scoped learning environments.  He hopes that the interdisciplinary nature of PIER will help him expand his horizons and move towards that goal.  People would be surprised to know that Benjamin was once a classicist, and graduated with a minor in classics and ancient history.
