Diane Turnshek to Present at TEDxPittsburgh

Physics faculty member Diane Turnshek will present a lecture at TEDxPittsburgh on the impact of light pollution. The event begins at noon on Saturday, May 23 at the Byham Theater in downtown Pittsburgh.

Excess light at night, like that from lights on buildings, signs and other sources, can have a negative impact on the nocturnal ecosystem and our health. This excessive light also can be a waste of energy and financial resources. Turnshek has worked to organize artists, scientists and property owners to come together in a fight against light pollution, especially in Pittsburgh where the city is in the process of converting public streetlights to LED lights.

TEDx conferences are independently organized, community-based versions of the larger TED experience, showcasing transformative and thought provoking ideas on the local level. TEDxPittsburgh is Pittsburgh’s platform for showcasing the ideas, individuals and innovations that are redefining the Steel City. This year’s conference will feature 10 local speakers.
