The purpose of freshman orientation is to introduce incoming 4th class midshipmen to the customs and courtesies of the military including: proper uniform presentation, drill, physical training and bearing, and to transition them from high school students to NROTC midshipmen. The incoming class is taught the importance of moral, mental, and physical readiness as a future officer. The 4th class is expected to participate in various evolutions including the navy’s physical fitness assessment, multiple swimming exercises, consuming MREs (pre-packed field rations), and standing watch. They also learn about the standards of academics, service events and unit activities set by the battalion for the school year. The final result to strive for is for the freshmen to form together as a class and eventually as a unit to accomplish goals greater than any one person.
