Summary of Naval ROTC Program Options

If you are searching for a way to serve your country and for financial assistance during your time in college, the NROTC Scholarship Program is an excellent curriculum that not only offers you the assistance necessary to pursue higher education, but it also provids you with the leadership and professional experience that will accompany you throughout your life.

Within the NROTC Scholarship, you may choose to pursue either a two or a four-year scholarship.  Both opportunities provide financial assistance depending on when you choose to apply to the program.  The four-year program is available for graduating high school seniors.  The two-year program, however, is for freshman and sophomores already enrolled in a college or university. 

National Four-Year Scholarship

A four-year Scholarship provides:

  • Full tuition at one of the NROTC host or cross-town affiliate colleges or universities
  • All college/university educational fees
  • Stipend for text books
  • All uniforms
  • A monthly stipend each academic month
  • On graduation, commission as Ensign, US Navy; or Second Lieutenant, US Marine Corps
  • Total Mmtary service obligation is eight years, at least four of which must be active duty

A two-year Scholarship provides:

  • Covers final two years of college
  • Provides tuition, fees, textbooks, and uniforms for two academic years
  • Subsitence allowance for a maximum of 20 months
  • Open to college students who have completed their sophomore year or third year in a five-year curriculum
  • Deadline date: 15MARCH of the applicant's sophomore year
  • On graduation, commission as Ensign, US Navy; or Second Lieutenant, US Marince Corps
  • Total military service obligation is eight years, at least four of which must be active duty 

College Program

The NROTC program also provides opportunities for students to participate in the program without tuition assistance.  College Program students in the porgram receive the same leadership training and professional opportunities upon graduation as students with the NROTC Scholarship.  The NROTC College Program can either be a two or four year program, depending on when you apply to the NROTC program.  Applicants for the College Program are selected from students already attending or accepted by colleges with NROTC programs.  Four-year applicants may apply through professors of naval science upon commencement of freshman year, and two-year applicants must apply before spring of sophomore year.

NROTC College Program:

  • Pays for uniforms and instructional fees for naval science courses
  • Provides an "advanced standing" stipend for maximum of 20 months that begins at the start of the junior year of college
  • Requires students to complete naval science and other university courses, a few specific university courses, and attend one summer training session
  • Obligates students to eight years commissioned service, at least three of which must be active duty. 

Tweedale Scholarship

Each unit Professor of Naval Science (PNS) is assigned two Tweedale Scholarships each year.  This particular scholarship focuses on students majoring in specific technical fields.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Student must have completed at least one, but no more than four academic terms with a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) which places the student above peer mean, or 3.0, whichever is higher
  • Transcript must reflect grade of  "C" or better in all courses attempted
  • Completion of one academic term of college level math or science
  • Complete Naval Science Course 101 as soon as possible
  • Comply with standards regarding leadership potential and military/physical fitness.
  • Submit a revised degree plan for review by the PNS (professor of Naval science); degree plan must be verified by student's faculty advisor and demonstrate that the student will be able to complete all naval science requirements and still graduate on time with his/her assigned class group
  • Major in: Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, or Physics
  • Strong math/science background in high school and "B" or better in Calculus, if completed

Navy Nurse Corps NROTC Scholarship

  • Available to students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • If selected for scholarship, selectees must major in a nursing degree program leading to a BSN
  • Upon graduation, Nurse NROTC Scholarship Program Midshipmen are commissioned as officers in the Naval Nurse Corps
  • Nurse NROTC Scholarship eligibility and selection procedures are the same as regular four-year NROTC Scholarship Program requirements
  • Academic, physical, and military requirements differ slightly from regular NROTC
  • The Nurse NROTC Scholarship Program is not for those pursuing any other medical program
