Veterans Affairs Hospital Visit
During the fall semester Midshipmen travel to the Aspinwall Veterans Hospital to help with a Labor Day picnic to show their appreciation for our veterans. Some Midshipmen cook and serve veterans, while others bring patients down from their rooms and visit with them during lunch. The veterans love to tell us life stories and memories from their years served in the military.
Valentine’s Day is another time Midshipmen travel to the Aspinwall VA. They participate in a program called Valentines for Vets. This is a nationwide program that gathers volunteers to help pass out valentines made by elementary school children. Midshipmen visit all the different floors, spending about 15 minutes on each one. During the time spent on each floor, they all talk with the veterans saying thank you and showing them their appreciation for the Veteran’s dedication to our country.
Both of these events are very successful for both the VA and for the Midshipmen. The staff is thankful for our time and help, and the veterans enjoy our company. The Midshipmen all leave with a sense of pride and ambition knowing they will someday be in these veterans’ shoes, telling similar stories.
