Navy Birthday Ball

By MIDN 2/C Mark Jones

This past October 13th marked the 233 birthday of the United States Navy.  Every year the Navy Option Midshipmen attend this event to honor the birth of our service.  The Midshipmen wear formal Service Dress Blues and the event is a good opportunity to meet individuals on active duty.  It also helps to build unit morale and cohesion between the Navy Option Midshipmen.  In addition, it provides a good example of formal etiquette for military functions.

This years Navy Birthday Ball was held after the actual birthday, on Friday the 17th.  The evening starts with the presentation of the Colors, where the National Ensign is marched forward for all to view.  Dinner is then served and the guest of honor provides a motivating speech to all those in attendance.  Afterward, there is a cake cutting ceremony and the birthday message from the Chief of Naval Operations is read.  Finally, the night ends with dancing and socializing.

The Navy Birthday Ball is another chance for the Midshipmen to get together for a good time, while providing them a chance to learn and exercise proper military etiquette.  We honor our country, service, and servicemen abroad, as well as those that have gone before us.
