Dining In
By MIDN 2/C Ryan Heilman
Dining In is an annual event for the battalion in which the first class and second class Midshipmen, along with the Unit staff, gather for a formal dinner. The dinner is designed to bring together the upper class midshipmen and staff, and demonstrate formal military etiquette. Traditionally the second class Midshipmen provide the entertainment in the form of a skit as a tribute to the outgoing seniors.
The evening begins with a social hour where all members can converse and greet the Unit’s Commanding Officer and guest of honor. After taking their seats for the formal dinner, several toasts are given during the ceremony to honor distinguished people, both past and present, and all of the military services. Following the dinner, all skits are performed and the evening concludes when the Commanding Officer determines the amusement was to his satisfaction.
This year Dining In will be held on April 3rd at Amici Restaurant, located in Pittsburgh. MIDN 2/C Giger will be playing the role of “Vice President” who to some extent directs the progress of the dinner. Our guest of honor will be Brian Patterson, a former Navy Lieutenant who just left the unit earlier this year.
In conclusion, Dining In is an event that provides a learning experience and brings together part of the battalion for an enjoyable evening. This has been a very successful event in the past and we hope to continue the tradition in 2009.
