Event: Carnegie Mellon University’s Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) Race Team is raising money and collecting food to help feed abandoned cats and kittens housed at the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center on Hamilton Avenue in Pittsburgh. The CMU students join more than 3 million Americans who are participating in the national “Make A Difference Day,” when individuals and communities are encouraged to take action and volunteer to solve social and local humanitarian issues. USA Weekend Magazine and NBC News are sponsoring the national volunteer day.

“This project, dubbed ‘Kibble for Kitties,’ is designed to raise food and awareness for the plight of abandoned cats and kittens,” said Adam Brecher, a CMU senior mechanical engineering major and head of the SAE race team. Cats rival dogs as one of the most popular pets, but more and more stray cats are being abandoned putting stress on animal shelters nationwide.

“We are extremely pleased that CMU engineering students can take time from their challenging studies to help us feed our growing numbers of abandoned cats and kittens. We applaud their efforts, and encourage others to join in the battle to save these innocent and endangered animals,” said Ann Yeager, marketing director of the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center of Pittsburgh.

The “Kibble for Kitties” event will feature King’s Restaurant’s Frownie Brownie helping students pack food boxes for the animal shelter, a holiday tree decorated with cat toys and photos of kitties for adoption. The event is supported by the Point Breeze Veterinary Clinic, Frick Park Market and Smiley’s Pet Pad.

When: Noon, Thursday, Oct. 25.

Where: Dilks Library, Roberts Engineering Hall, off Frew Street, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213.
