Was there ever a more exciting month on campus? September brought Bill Gates and Henry Hillman and the official opening of the Gates Center for Computer Science and the Hillman Center for Future-Generation Technologies, many activities related to the Pittsburgh Summit (G-20), and a $10 million grant from the National Science Foundation that could help researchers in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd presented a special keynote address to the Carnegie Mellon community Sept. 24, followed by an interactive panel of policy experts. Check out his address and his tour of the Robotics Institute.
President Jared Cohon shared Pittsburgh's transformation story prior to the G-20 summit. Watch his discussion with University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Mark Nordenberg and UPMC President and CEO Jeffrey Romoff. Read Cohon's essay on CNN.com.
U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Dan Rooney kicked-off a daylong conference focused on revitalizing the global econonmy. The conference was organized by Carnegie Mellon and the Atlantic Council. Download the conference report, published by Carnegie Mellon University press.
Professor Gregory Lehane directed First Lady Michelle Obama's concert for the spouses of G-20 leaders. Check out the concert that took place at the Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA), and featured students, Yo-Yo Ma, Trisha Yearwood and Sara Bareilles.
Carnegie Mellon welcomed CT&T, a South Korean company that is the largest electric car manufacturer, to the region during a media conference on campus. CT&T announced that they will be opening a regional facility, which will bring 200-300 jobs to the area.
Anthony Mason of the CBS Evening News interviewed Red Whittaker and Bob Bittner of the Robotics Institute. Whittaker called Pittsburgh "a winning town" in Mason's piece titled "The New Pittsburgh."
Bill Gates said he's always inspired when he comes to Carnegie Mellon. In his keynote address for the dedication of the new SCS centers, he said, "I'll be following your work, and I can't wait to see the great advances that are delivered and the progress that will enable." Professor Priya Narasimhan was profiled as someone who embodies Pittsburgh's innovative success by Newsweek's Chief Political Correspondent and Pittsburgh native Howard Fineman. The article ran in the magazine's Sept. 22 issue.
