The human touch
Given Carnegie Mellon's well-documented prowess in technology, the arts, science and business, you'd be forgiven if you were not also aware of just how strong we are in the humanities. Fortunately, others have taken notice. The university's innovative Humanities Scholars Program recently received a $200,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. The grant will help humanities faculty develop courses for the program, and it will also support scholars in Carnegie Mellon's Humanities Center. The Humanities Center, by the way, received a $2 million challenge grant in 2005 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The NEH will award the center $500,000, contingent on the center raising an additional $1.5 million by 2008.
Speaking of the Humanities Center, it is sponsoring the Faces of Democracy International Film Festival starting this Wednesday. Be sure to check it out.
