Have research, will travel
Faculty from the Mellon College of Science recently attended ABRCMS--the annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students--held Nov. 8 - 11 in Anaheim, Calif. Peter Berget and Emily Stark represented the Department of Biological Sciences; the Chemistry Department was represented by Roberto Gil. The largest multidisciplinary conference in the United States, ABRCMS offers mentoring and networking opportunities for conference attendees. Thousands of minority undergraduates from across the country attended to learn more about advanced training in the biomedical sciences, whether it be graduate school, medical school or research fellowships. ABRCMS is also a great way for undergraduates from around the country to present their research results. Leslie Ann Alexis, currently a senior at Hunter College, worked with Peter Berget as part of the 10-week 2006 Summer Undergraduate Research Program in the Department of Biological Sciences. Alexis, who was supported by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, won an award at ABRCMS for her poster presentation on her research developing biosensors in Berget's lab.
