Breakin' the Mold
The theme for this year’s orientation program for first-year students is “Breakin’ the Mold,” and that’s exactly what the Class of 2012 has already done. Not once, but twice.
With 1,481 students, this year’s freshman class is the largest in Carnegie Mellon history, breaking the 1,428 mark set two years ago. And with 633 females, this year’s group has more women than ever before, surpassing by far the 544 co-eds who matriculated to Carnegie Mellon in 2002.
The class arrives on campus Sunday, Aug. 17, for a weeklong program in which they’ll get to know Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburgh and each other before starting classes on Monday, Aug. 25. With an average SAT score of 2,060 (670 in both critical reading and writing, and 720 in math) — whatever happened to 1,600? — it’ll be interesting to see what other molds this class may break.
Good luck, Class of 2012!
