Hey! We resemble that remark
We were happy to see that Carnegie Mellon alumna Elizabeth Currid is getting headlines in New York City for her new book "The Warhol Economy", which was the subject of an article in Tuesday's Village Voice. The book extols the influence that art and culture have on New York's economy, and she was inspired in part by Andy Warhol, one of Pittsburgh's favorite sons and one of Carnegie Mellon's most famous alumni.
We're glad that Elizabeth-who holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Carnegie Mellon-decided to go to school here in Pittsburgh, even if it wasn't exactly her first choice:
"I recall that the only thing that even remotely assuaged my general distress of having to attend a nerdy, technical school in grey, cloudy Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the fact that Andy Warhol had gone there too and so it just couldn't be that bad," Currid writes in the preface to her first book, The Warhol Economy, to be feted three weeks from now at Deitch Projects. As a matter of fact, the university had considered adopting the motto "Nerdy technical school" but it wouldn't fit on our pocket protectors.
Seriously, we are proud of Elizabeth, and with Homecoming scarcely two months away, we hope that she finds her way back to campus for a visit. We just can't guarantee that the sun will shine while she is here.
