Between a bullet and a target
The News Journal in Wilmington, Del., features an article today about Stephanie Kwolek, the retired DuPont scientist whose work led to the development of Kevlar--the fiber used to make bulletproof vests and other forms of body armor. Kwolek is--you guessed it--an alumna of Carnegie Mellon. She graduated in 1946 from Margaret Morrison Carnegie College, which was part of Carnegie Mellon's predecessor, the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Since the Gulf War in 1991, almost every U.S. soldier has worn a Kevlar helmet, and more than 3,000 law enforcement officers have survived fatal or debilitating wounds as a result of Kevlar armor, according to The News Journal article.
