Carnegie Mellon University President Jared L. Cohon Says Congressman
John Murtha's Vision Led to New Fields of Research

The following is a statement by Carnegie Mellon University President Jared L. Cohon on the passing of Congressman John Murtha:

On behalf of the entire Carnegie Mellon community, I wish to express my sadness at the passing of Congressman John Murtha. Our thoughts are with the Murtha family in this time of great loss.

Congressman Murtha had a strong vision of the power of innovation to improve opportunities for his community, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States. As a result of this vision and leadership, universities, medical centers, students and businesses in our region are at the forefront of research ranging from the protection of the Internet, to robotics, to major new applications in health care.

But of course John Murtha was more than just a Congressman from Western Pennsylvania. He was a Congressman to every man and woman who served our nation in uniform, particularly those who returned wounded and in need of care. We can all be grateful for this legacy of compassionate leadership.
