Local Voters To Gather at Carnegie Mellon on Sept. 27
For Statewide Deliberative Poll on Same-Sex Marriage
Event: Carnegie Mellon University is one of four host sites for the statewide "Deliberative Poll® on the Issue of Marriage in America" presented by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Program for Deliberative Democracy. For hot-button social issues like same-sex marriage, deliberative polling can be a useful strategy, providing an indication of what an entire community would think if it had the opportunity to engage in intense deliberation on a particular issue.
Prior to attending this event, the 100 participants selected from Allegheny County voter registration records will have read background materials on the historical, religious and societal aspects of marriage. On the day of the poll, the participants will gather in small, moderated groups to discuss and deliberate the topic amongst themselves and with experts, and then respond to a survey. The post-survey results will be tabulated by the evening of the event.
When: 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 27
Where: Porter Hall 100 on Carnegie Mellon's campus
