To Host National Bhangra Competition Nov. 8
Event: Teams from colleges across the nation will perform at the second annual Bhangra in the Burgh competition, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University's Mayur-South Asian Student Alliance. Modern bhangra fuses hip-hop rhythms with traditional, lively folk dancing that originated in the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. Teams dancing in colorful costumes will compete for $5,250 in cash prizes, and ticket sales will benefit the Homeless Children's Education Fund of Allegheny County. Last year's event attracted a sell-out crowd of nearly 2,300 and raised $6,000 for the fund.
Teams from Columbia University, Cornell University, Drexel University, New York University, Northwestern University, Rutgers University, the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) will be competing. The VCU team will be representing the DCM Punjabi Arts Academy. Bhangra teams from Carnegie Mellon, Point Park University and the University of Pittsburgh will perform exhibitions. Comedian Paul Varghese from the second season of NBC's "Last Comic Standing" will serve as emcee.
