Media Advisory: Carnegie Mellon To Demonstrate New Generation of Devices
Enabling People to "Feel" Virtual Objects on Their Computer Screens
EVENT: Get the feel of a haptic interface, a device that allows people to use their sense of touch as they move 3-D objects on a computer screen or navigate through virtual worlds. Ralph Hollis, research professor in Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute, has developed a haptic interface based on magnetic levitation that may provide the most realistic sense of touch available with any such device. Support from the National Science Foundation enabled Hollis and his research team to enhance the performance of this device. They soon will distribute copies of the machine to fellow researchers in the U.S. and Canada. At this event, reporters can use the maglev haptic interfaces to feel textures displayed on a computer screen, follow the contours of a virtual bunny and, with the world's only two-handed maglev haptic interface, sense the heft of a heavy block as they lift it.
