Media Advisory: Carnegie Mellon
Spring Carnival Set for April 17-19

Please Note Traffic Alert

Event: Carnegie Mellon University will hold its annual Spring Carnival Thursday, April 17, through Saturday, April 19.

This year's opening ceremony, scheduled for 3 p.m., Thursday, April 17 on the "Midway" (Morewood Gardens parking lot) will mark the first appearance of Carnegie Mellon's new costumed mascot performer, and Mascot Identity Task Force members will announce the results of the university's mascot-naming survey. The name students, faculty, staff and alumni chose will be used for both the live Scottish terrier and costumed performer. The opening ceremony also will include remarks by President Jared Cohon and a performance by Carnegie Mellon's Kiltie Band.

The Sweepstakes buggy races, a tradition since 1920, will be held Friday and Saturday morning, April 18-19. If inclement weather causes the cancellation of the Friday and Saturday competitions, races will be held Sunday, April 20, during the same time frame. The university will also host numerous activities throughout the weekend on the "Midway."

CmuTV will broadcast full-scale event coverage of the buggy races, including a NASCAR-style video production featuring more than 10 cameras, on channel 17. The television station will stream coverage online at www.cmuTV.org/buggy/. The student radio station, WRCT 88.3 FM, will also provide coverage of the live action, including interviews and play-by-play commentary.

When: Buggy races will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday and Saturday, April 18-19. Carnival activities will be held 9 a.m.-11 p.m. on Thursday, April 17; 8 a.m.-11 p.m. on Friday, April 18; and 8 a.m.-10 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.

Where: Spring Carnival activities will take place in the Morewood Gardens parking lot, across the street from Cyert and Hamburg halls. Buggy races will be held on Tech and Frew streets, and Schenley Drive.

Traffic Alert:  The City of Pittsburgh has granted permits to close several Oakland-area roads for Carnegie Mellon's Sweepstakes buggy races Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19. If inclement weather causes the cancellation of the Friday and Saturday competitions, races will be held Sunday, April 20, during the same time frame.

Vehicles cannot be parked on Margaret Morrison Street, Tech Street, Frew Street and Schenley Drive after midnight on the day of the races. These streets will close at 6 a.m. and will reopen by 12:30 p.m. Access to the streets will be blocked beginning at 6 a.m. in the following locations: Schenley Park by the golf course, Schenley Park at Serpentine Drive, Margaret Morrison Street at Forbes Avenue, and the Panther Hollow Bridge at the Schenley Bridge. Both the City of Pittsburgh Police and Carnegie Mellon Police will be present during the races to help monitor traffic.

Vehicles will have access to Phipps Conservatory from the streets off Forbes Avenue.  Visitors will park on the streets by the Carnegie Library and the surrounding area.  City of Pittsburgh Police stationed at barricades will give bus drivers instructions for passenger unloading.

There also will be a fireworks show at 9:30 p.m., Saturday, April 19 in Gesling Stadium. During the show, shells or debris from the fireworks may affect vehicles parked on Margaret Morrison Street and on the upper level of Carnegie Mellon's East Campus Garage. Vehicles may be parked in either area during the show, but owners will do so at their own risk.
