Carnegie Mellon Psychologist Named
To National Academy of Education
Honor Reflects University's Growing Reputation as a Center for Educational Research
PITTSBURGH—Carnegie Mellon University Psychology Professor David Klahr has been elected to the National Academy of Education (NAEd). Klahr is the first Carnegie Mellon faculty member to be elected to the NAEd, an elite group of researchers who promote quality education research and policy.
Klahr is a cognitive psychologist whose research has centered on effective techniques for teaching science and on children's ability to reason scientifically. He is the training director of Carnegie Mellon's Program in Interdisciplinary Education Research (PIER), which trains doctoral students from several disciplines — including psychology, statistics and robotics — to conduct applied educational research. The students earn a Ph.D. in their chosen field while performing research aimed at improving instruction in schools.
Klahr is also the education director of the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center, a joint venture between Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh that sponsors rigorous research into how people learn and develops innovative learning technologies and strategies.
Both PIER and the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center are examples of how Carnegie Mellon has become a leading center of education research, even though the university has no school of education. A majority of the 200 members of the NAEd are from schools of education, which makes Klahr's election even more significant.
"This is, of course, a personal honor, but more importantly, it further enhances our institutional visibility and credibility in the education sciences," Klahr said. "The fact that someone at Carnegie Mellon is a member of NAEd is one of several indicators that we are important players in the educational research arena."
