Symantec AntiVirus for Desktops
Computing Services licenses, supports and recommends Symantec Antivirus for antivirus protection for Windows and Macintosh systems. We also recommend Symantec Antivirus for Spyware protection on Windows computers.
Whenever you exchange files, you run the risk of accidentally downloading a virus. To protect yourself, you should install an antivirus package. Our licensed and supported antivirus client is Symantec AntiVirus. Once Symantec AntiVirus is installed, the LiveUpdate utility should be run weekly to update the virus definition file providing optimal protection.
WARNING: Running an outdated version of antivirus software won’t protect your machine. Without continuous updates, the software’s virus definition files quickly become obsolete and ineffective against the latest attacks.
If you purchased a new computer, the antivirus software that was bundled with it is probably only a trial package with antivirus file definitions that expire in three months. You must uninstall the trial antivirus software (consult the help file for instructions). Then, download Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus and configure it for automatic updates.
NOTE: If you are running Microsoft Windows Vista you can visit this page to download the correct version of Symantec Antivirus.
NOTE: If you are running the 64-bit version of Windows XP (known as Windows XP Professional x64), you can visit this page to download the correct version of Symantec Antivirus. Note that the 64-bit version is not common (it requires special hardware), so if you're not familiar with the 64-bit version, you are almost certainly not running it and should use the installer listed below.
