Career Paths and Positions
The career paths and positions held by MPD alumni vary based on their undergraduate academic backgrounds, talents, skills, interests and years of work experience prior to entering the program. Some positions/titles held by alumni include Design Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Industrial Designer, Design Researcher & Strategist, Experience Design Manager, Brand Manager, New Ventures Team Member, and President. Career & Professional Development Center
The Career & Professionl Development Center (CPDC) at CMU is a centralized career center staffed by a team of seasoned and highly-educated professionals who orchestrate the career exploration, experiential learning, and career networking needs of students and alumni. Throughout the year the center hosts a variety of career fairs, workshops and networking events as well as conduct one-on-one consultation sessions with students focused on resume building, cover letter writing and interviewing skills. MPD students have direct and regular access two career consultants in the center; one with expertise in the field of engineering and one with expertise in the field of design. The center also manages the university's online recruiting system, Tartan Trak.
Technical Opportunities Conference (TOC)
The Technical Opportunities Conference, Carnegie Mellon's largest career fair, focuses specifically on technical employment and takes place on campus each Fall. The TOC offers a great opportunity for companies and potential employees to make connections for both full-time and summer employment. The event, which is run by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and supported by the Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT), is open to students of all majors and years.
Confluence - Career Fair
The Confluence Career Fair, co-organized by the School of Design and the Career & Professional Development Center, is specifically designed for undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Design. The two day event attracts design professionals from corporate, consulting and start-up environments to campus to meet faculty and students, tour studios, review portfolios and interview candidates for internships and full-time positions.
Professional Associations & CMU Chapters
Student-led chapters of the following professional associations all have a presence on the the campus of Carnegie Mellon. Many students find that they offer great opportunities to socialize as well as network. The IDSA chapter in particular attracts many MPD students and the chapter organizes annual trips for their members to visit a variety of consulting and corporate design environments in other cities.
